caps dont like to be left for years they dry up,i think a few £ saves all the hassle they cause

Back then capacitors were so much better, they will most likely never go! It was only later on when the electrolyte formula was stolen and passed on did the problems of bad caps start to happen as the formula was wrong, important ingredients were missing, so the caps worked but several years later that's when the problems showed up!

Back in the 1980's I don't think i ever changed a cap unless it was on some HT line of 450v or so, It was always something else capacitors going was not heard of really.

but what do i know

only hassle i've had from caps is ones that have had physical damage;

partly pulled off then pushed back on again

punctured by stacking pcbs

broken legs

dry joints

IMO electrically they're sturdier than their reputation might suggest.

I have found that a "filler primer", works really well on pitted surfaces left by corrosion. It is a really thick primer that you spray on, and then wet 'n' dry right back until all you can see is the primer filling the pitted bits.

yeah its great stuff but no use here i'm afraid
this control panel should be bare aluminium so i need to remove the corrosion then reinstate the brushed look. i looked how to do that but the corrosion is ultra
