I think the Japanise Subaru's came with an octane plug
One for super and one for normal fuel I'm guessing that if running on normal octane fuel the the ignition timing would be retarded to suit and maybe slightly less boost
Wasent the pump octane level of a fuel based on how much
Compression you could give it before it auto ignited
It's been quite a few years since I've been at college now and Im not as heavily into cars as I was back then so I've forgot a lot of the info
So you lost 10bhp with an engine swap but saved £160 a year in tax if you took some of the weight out of the car you would probably be back up to the same feeling as the 1.6 gave you too great stuff
