that a good point about the onboard mainboard battery of the pc ... robotgreg u said u hadnt used to mame pc for a few years... can u tell me, was the mame pc totally unplugged from a power source during that time (ie. there was no kettle lead going into it from the wall mains socket, or the wall mains socket itself had its switch turned off) ?

regarding Chunksin's image, does that come with some kind of frontend/menu so u can launch games from a list via eg. the joystick ?

Yep, it's groovymame with Attract Mode on the front end and has a user friendly install wizard to get you up and running. Greg, happy to help out however I can, either with a ready to go PC or remote help getting you going again

HD definitely dead and struggling to get data off but still trying. So might be why was losing cfg or might be cooincidence.

Someone mentioned this:

Anyone seen these as I'm confused - do they replace or in addition to a jpac?

Hi Greg, can't comment on that ebay controller, although chepaer than a j-pac if any good. I'd recommend throwing together a pi to jpac / jamma thingy unless you want to run 'modern' games.

It's pretty good (ie better than a pandoras box) , uses one of Rich 'chunksins' excellent images and can be plugged straight into a jamma cab. The thread is old and rather long (but still semi active) http://www.ukvac.com/forum/diy-pi2jpac-jamma-adapter_topic361469_page1.html

Got a couple fo quick questions about groovymame:

Is groovymame a different version of mame that you would then normally add a front end to or is it stand alone front end in itself?

If it is the front end, can you set up custom games lists rather than having just one huge list of all games?

If you can't set up custom game lists, presumably you could add a front end like mamewah (or another but that's the one I know does have them) t have the custom lists.

Cheers as ever for any help and advice.

Its just a mame executable, so would need a front end to go alongside it if you were wanting to run it in a cab.
It is much more than just a mame executable though, its heavily optimised for 15khz CRT output, and for as little latency and input lag as is possible. It's the best you will get without FPGA or actual real hardware.
I will always recommend Groovymame over a Pi2Jamma type solution as you are able to run the newest versions of Mame rather than 10 year old versions, and whilst a Pi can of course do 15khz CRT output, it still doesn't have the additional optimisations that GM has.
All down to budget, and what you want from it at the end of the day I guess. Many people are happy with a Pi, its probably just me who never was.

Been using Groovy for a number of years, and all interest in original boards went out of the window the moment I realised I was playing games without noticing lag or stuttering or any of the usual emulation downsides - its exceptional.

Making progress with the replacement set up but got a bit of a problem now.

My mate has very kindly set up a new hard drive for me with all files on and Rich's groovy mame ready to install. All drivers installed fine and screen set to 15Hz. But when I installed the PC back in the mame cab, the picture rotates rapidly so you can't see anything.

My mate thought it would be just needing the monitor dials tweaking but done this and can't seem to get a proper picture.

What is odd though is the initial blue screen with HP logo when you very first boot up was clear (not now after I've buggered about with the screen dials). I vaguely remember that this screen did used to be duplicated before ie rolling and not right when the mame part was working fine so logical that if the HP screen was fine initially then implies the mame screen would be out so correct to adjust .

The fact that I've made the initial blue screen go out of sync suggests that it can

So my qus are:

Is it likely that the screen dials will fix the problem or does something else needs doing to PC to output at 15Hz?

If it is screen which is the dial I need to focus on to get the picture back properly? (Monitor is a Hantarex 900E, so fairly standard).

Thanks as ever for all the help on here

So if the Bios logo was stable, I am assuming you have flashed the Atom bios. Not something I have ever done on mine, but I keep meaning to.
It sounds like either the hsync/vsyn needed trimming for a slightly different desktop frequency, or windows isnt outputting 15khz at all. I would try letting it get to windows, and plugging in a normal PC monitor, and (as long as it isnt a fancy multi sync) see if you can see a picture. If its showing as out of range, then its sync adjustments, but if it displays a picture, then youve done something wrong at the video modes step - check the video card in device manager is being recognised as a Calamity card, and not the normal ati.

Also sack off the hard drive and get a cheap 240gb SSD drive !

Many thanks Tronads. You were right the driver hadn't been set up fully so showed a normal screen on the PC monitor.

So my mate has been trying to set it up following the instructions on Chunksin image installation of groovymame. He's very good with IT but even he's struggling!

The problem we have is that the set up has gone past the driver step and now boots into mame but for some reason the driver to output to 15HZ has not installed properly - it still shows clearly on the PC monitor. So he's asked me to ask here how can you go back to get to the driver set up. When we've tried to boot up in safe mode, F8 and then choose safe mode, it still goes into mame, so we need to get back to Windows.

Thanks again for help!

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a graphics card, just on board graphics on the motherboard but worked fine with the old HD mamewah set up.

Is it that with your set up it needs a separate graphics card?

Or would it easier to just get an arcade VGA card if I understand it correctly? If so which is the best place to get one or if just needs any graphics card which one would you recommend?

Many thanks

Greg
