its looking like i can move forward on this in a few weeks time. im hoping the very nice chap who helps can possibly, log his progress. being an old duffer and not owning a home system for years. i was totally sucked in by the beauty of the naomi games. when i got my first naomi it was running virtual athletics, wow you could make out the players botties. it was almost porn as far as i was concerned. i then progressed into shooters, i still cant get enough of zero gunners 2. for someone who had only owned 15k games this system opened my eyes to another dimension. i dont steal my games or systems i buy them. and lets be honest here, a naomi cab with net booting hardware is going to set you back close on a grand. a lot of people will just stick with mame because of that. i still buy games and cabs, even with mame and net booting available. the main gripe for me is that people will not be able to venture into naomi, purely on financial reasons. i have no wish to see dealers/traders lose money, we need these people to keep gaming alive. as i have said, i also have a dreamcast. with this i enjoy shooting zombies, and catching fish. i cant justify a fishing cab or indeed a gun shooter, i dont have the space for these 2. i can get an awful lot of games on the dreamcast. infact all this talk has spurred me into putting a monitor into the 1 in the garage. happy days. time for a zombie killing spree.

cheers.

Just one thing. Naomi cabs are (or certainly can be) way, way less than a grand! My twin sit down ID3 will 'only' be in the region of a grand if and when it gets sold. I've seen upright Naomi's go for as little as £150 that don't need much more than stripping down and cleaning!

yes i agree, however. naomi 2 mobo, net dimm and a decent pc are all needed. and at £150 for a stand up, i would think will have screen burn
smiley11.gif
a decent cabs going to cost £300 upwards. i wouldnt let my id cab go for less than £750-1000 but tbh i doubt i would ever sell it. i wouldnt mind a twin, but im a sad lonely old git who lives alone so no need for a twin. i should add though i still enjoy the classics. the last naomi i bought cost me £100, it was without an i/o board or monitor, but i have those sitting spare. although i have an egret 2, i still think stand up naomis are the biz. just something about them. the have a presence that you dont get from an old woody. there are 2 naomis in the garage just now. 1 is a cut down which will be getting the jamma treatment, the other is a stand up, which will stay on naomi hardware. i should have got the monitor out at the weekend when i had visitors, but we spent most of saturday discharging monitors and swapping chassis. its weird how 1 game can stop play, at mine its robotron. as soon as it was working it was getting battered. bomjac has the high score at the moment. anyway back on topic naomi rocks.

cheers.

Hi guys,

We've been having a discussion on this in the Mod forum for a couple of days and have reached a consensus.

We've got no problem (and in fact would quite appreciate it!) if anybody (Hi Setch!) fancies writing up a netbooting how-to.

The conditions are that it must not contain links to any material for download that is copyrighted.

For example, if there is a tool to mangle the images that you already possess into a format which can be used then it's ok to link to that tool as long as it's been written by somebody who has declared it public domain, FOSS or just given their permission for it to be freely distributed.

If the tool is actually nicked from a manufacturers software/platform development kit and isn't licensed for free distribution then it can't be linked to sorry.

In the same way we're happy to help people get their MAME setup working but we won't allow people to share/post ROM links, we've got no problem with people helping each other get netbooting but we can't allow anybody to violate copyright by linking to pirated material.

So basically common sense rules

Other than that, fill your boots. No point in not sharing the knowledge as long as it's not anything illegal.

Mods - if you could find someone willing to put the time in (Setch?) could we have a Naomi section with a sub section of Mods to fill it with good stuffs? I think the net booting thing should be covered with the usual warnings about 'no roms' etc.

thoughts?

enjoy your holiday grobda, i will be waiting for my stock of rock

zero gunner 2 is the biz.

lets hope that this thread releases the power of the naomi. iamcromby has all the software and is trying to suss it out just now. i also got a pm from a couple of members who are also trying to crack it. i think if nothing else it at least proves that idiot guides are an essential, when dealing with older gamers who do not use computers at work. sometimes people forget that we arent all whizz kids. i feel a tshirt coming on
smiley20.gif
im happy to wait for a member close by to help me out. he should be back in a couple of weeks. hopefully by then this thread has unlocked the power, and he can then show me. the guide ol posted is supposed to work but i dont have anybody yet that has managed it. so whos going to be first ???

Hi All

yes The guru guide will get you through things but you do need to be a little bit IT savi to get though it all :)

I've now writen a very basic guide for John on the actual netbooting, it does need cleaning up a bit as it was done in a hurry.

i will send the link to Tim and he can confirm if im stepping on anyones toes..

I still need to go through the decrypting tutorial which is the painfull part and Im struggling to find a way of making a "dummies guide" for this, and esentially i guess this is the bit that will piss SEGA off :)

Im happy to spend some time getting all this sorted and written up, theres alot of info that i feel should be Public Domain but publishing certain things will certainly piss off some traders and I know others on here have already been blacklisted because of this..

se etch, se etch, se etch, se etch, se etch.

agreed with olly. a naomi section would be cool
smiley20.gif
i hope that in doing this no one is in danger of getting hung, drawn and quartered. if the net booting thing is a sore point then possibly it could be an underground thing. i.e. such and such can help. i have advised a couple of guys on this, but as i say no one has reported back and confirmed a working set up. i even think that some peeps may even be worried about even being linked to it. the hardware side is pretty basic, its only a couple of jumpers involved. hopefully i have it working in a few weeks time. until then i will just continue using carts and gd-roms. im hoping i get a new drive on sunday and this will enable me to fire up the id cab. im wondering if i will see a smear campaign due to my curiosity. i wait with feverish hands for the idiot guide. but i probably wont attempt it myself, i will wait for an adult to help me.

cheers to setch and the mods.

mince, i need a power plug for the gd rom. mo at videotronics might have 1, but he thinks its the wrong wiring for the gd rom, so it might be a hack job to get it working. this cab is turning into a nightmare. it just seems every step of the way is laden with problems.

I'd be very interested too, Setch - you da man.

Is it ok to ask if mame chds can be used? (I think they may need 'fixing' first)

As I know where to get those from.

As long as it conforms to the rulez above then it's fine :) So no links to download material that hasn't been licensed as such by the copyright holder, other than that fill your boots!

I've just got back from some time away so am just reading Setch's excellent guide and will have my feedback soon.

Right. As far as I can tell there is nothing in Setch's guide which violates any copyright. I'm going to post the how-to in the mod section to see if anybody disagrees but I don't see there's anything problematic so hopefully we'll have the go-ahead for Setch to post this up in the forum very soon.

Nice work dude - very good stuff

Hi Tim

Id imagine its the other part of the tutorial that would violate the copyright, so as long as we assume people can sort out their own images then I think we will be fine.

a wee update.

this morning at approx 8.37 gmt, a brown parcel was delivered to me. this parcel contains all the stuff i need to progress. the person who sent it will be giving me a talk through it. i believe this contains the gui and also the extraction software. apparently its a piece of piss to use it. i will be attempting the boot later on today. if it is as easy as he thinks, using the dvds. then i will copy them and if need be offer them to members seeking to net boot. although i would need help burning the discs
smiley36.gif
i have never burnt a disc in my life. so fingers crossed im in.

cheers.

noooooooo!

after a fair bit of time setting up the system, im gubbed
smiley19.gif
i have taken a different approach to mr guru, im loading direct from a laptop, no router. the hardware is jumpered and is now set for booting.

the problem with the cable is that i have network cable, but i need a crossover cable ??? it would appear the network cable is a direct through cable. i need a crossover cable to loop the info back down to the dimm. might not seem like much but you could spend forever trying to boot it, but it wont. i will have the cable tomorrow, its coming from maplins. why do i always have the sh*tty stuff to fix ??? i never get easy faults. it sucks.

Sadly that's not something to fix. That's just a general networking thing. For two devices to talk to each other you need either:
  • A crossover cable
  • A switch, router or hub in between the two devices that connect to said device via straight through cables
  • Or, both ends to be capable of autodetecting a crossover cable (or lack of) and configuring themselves accordingly
Most modern devices fall into the last category, but sadly a Naomi does not.

Unfortunately, that's just life when it comes to networking.

almost there now
smiley20.gif
i have no doubt when i have bought said cable, i will have another problem
smiley36.gif
my path through life has never been easy
smiley36.gif
but if im honest its worth the hassle. for me this is an achievement
smiley20.gif
its been fun and informative, no major grief. i bought a cable for my gd=rom drive, it doesnt fit
smiley36.gif
all i want to do is drive around a track with my boot down, how hard can that be ??? methinks by thursday another 2 cabs will be running.
