That is hypnotic ! Great work.

In relation to time being the enemy for all of us, i hope someone invents a pill,
where we dont ever have to sleep, seems like a waste of 1/3 of your life.

Cheers guys, It's Adrian's fault all this, so I blame him entirely for adding to my time woes

I'm seriously enjoying doing this and really the effect demo'd here with the ghosts is pretty much chicken feed to the overall ambitions I've got for this work.

Don't know when it will be finished (aiming for a few months time), I need to really be harsh with myself and work on a section of demo at a time so I can structure the work and get it completed, unfortunately my brain runs at a million miles an hour and gets super sidetracked with things that pique my interest; so I've got to fight myself to finish this work.

Ok just starting to do some work again on my Pac-Man demo.

Thought I'd share this little nugget of work, try to watch it at at least 720p, it is a bit difficult to film a monitor as the ccd's on the camera don't like the light and contrast of the image the crt generates.

This is a proof of concept video showing 8 way independant scrolling on Pac-Man hardware, using interlacing techniques. I've since got a much more comprehensive scrolling system partly working which I'll share when I finish off the full demo.

The nice thing about programming with stupid hardware restrictions is it causes your brain to find clever solutions, involving weird data organisations and algorithms, it's the sort of thing you don't tend to do when working with high level languages.

Anyway the main demo is still progressing, I'm sorting only working on it subconsciously, which is when I do my best programming work, I'm not a single tasking sort of person, I'm generally thinking of about 50 things at once, which is why I tend to shoot of at various angles and never finish many projects.

Brilliant! Thanks for posting, I love this sort of stuff, please keep going!

I know what you mean when you said the diamond shapes looked like they were going the opposite way. I did some messing with a cheap FPGA board to generate a plain RGB signal on a monitor, making horizontal lines and vertical same as you had. When I made red lines scroll left and up and green lines go right and down in 1 pixel/.frame steps it looked crazy. You could not focus on which way anything was moving!

got distracted while looking back at some old school demos on the 8 bits and atari 2600, so decide to try and implement some plasma effects.

This is rough but it was a proof of concept.

I'm running the plasma effect in conjunction with other tile effects like the checkerboard scroller, to show it can be done. Not entirely happy with the functions I'm using but that's a time trade off and I haven't explored this very far to be honest, needs lots of tweeking, it's difficult to get a pleasing effect with a 28x32 resolution, anyway thought I'd share this. Best viewed at 720p60.

recorded with Fraps, losless, so the vid was 5.5GB, took 6 minutes to upload at work

Enjoy.

That's ridiculous. Pac hardware just shouldn't be capable of that! You sir are using magic and as such should be burned as a witch!

Got any plans to take this to a game or just going to keep pushing the hardware further and further with more demos? You'll be putting in FMV next

Cool - where can I find a guide for the mame debugger ?

Do you have to do a custom build ?

Is the latest version debugger the best ? - I believe some people prefer an older version or am I wrong ?

Cheers, Col

Not read a guide, I use the in built help. Just type Help at the command window and enter commands to find out how to use.

No if you run from the command line (I have this set up in VS2015) it will tell you the checksums are wrong but happily load the roms and execute your code, with the debugger. You have to press F5 to start the emulator from the debug window, but this let's you set up breakpoints and watch values before you start (which is what I tend to do). The debugger is very powerful, it's great a keeping accurate track of beam position which is mega useful.

just launch like this mame pacman -debug

I'm currently using 157, which is quite a few versions behind the current build which is around 171, so don't know about that specifically.

If you have any further questions I will try to help, still just scratching the surface myself.
