Programming Tesla MH74S287 ?.

I bought some of these PROMs from ebay some time back and have only just had a need for one.

From new, they read as all zeros, when I'd normally expect to see FFs. Looking at a recent ebay description, a seller says that their un-programmed state is probably opposite to a 82S129.

Both my Data I/O 29b and Chiplab refuse to program them as National 74S287.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I could get around this ?.

I'd be interested to know if these PROMs are truly compatible to 82S129 's too.

It says 'Unprogrammed states are low level' so I'd expect a new blank device to read all 0's. So your Tesla chips DO match an 82S129. They're not EPROM technology remember, which do generally read as all 1's (0xFF)

If a 29b can't burn one then I don't hold much hope for other programmers. I've got a Dataman 48UXP that will do some PROMs but certainly not all of them. I got sent some Harris PROMs instead of 82S129s I wanted (long story, seller sent me non -blank ones at first). They DID correctly read as all 1's when blank but sadly my Dataman could not program them.

Mine only lists National as well (Xeltec ones)

from a quick search, Elnec programmers list them in case any one has one of those!

Thanks, a blank check on the Chiplab confirms that they are blank so that is probably right.

I found a datasheet for the Tesla, but gave up trying to read it.

My attempts at programming as the following have failed,

Signetics 82S129
AMD 27S21
National 74S287
TI 24S10
Harris 7611
Fujitsu 7114

The most promising of those was the Fujitsu 7114/L, as it was the only selection that passes the blank check on the 29b.

I also managed to mess up one chip, it changed one bit (incorrectly), when attempting to program as an AMD.

Just out of interest, what do you think "Verify at address 0", would mean while programming ?. The device remains blank and un-touched. Is it saying that it can't drive the address or data lines ?.

a lot of programmers verify as they go along, so they write a nibble / word (depends on the chip) and then read it back to see that it took, so it could just be saying I tried to write the first chunk (address 0) and read it back, and it was wrong

as you say the document is not easy reading, it could be that they need a different programming voltage or different timing to enable you to program them - on one programmer I have (if I still have it!) there was the option to change the timing of the write pulses, but on the one I use the most it is all preset for each maker / chip

Sheesh, the 29b is the king of PROM programmers. If that can't do it I don't know what can.

Only programmer i have found that has them listed in device list so far is

In US - bk 866b and 867b but at $1k to $1.2 k yeah i think ill take the hit for a few hundred proms

in UK - Elnec beeprog2 same as above just different company name.

But they do have one hell of a device list going for it lol 93454 device supported

But out of my price range. Looking for an older solution without doing the home made bit by bit programming.
Love my 29b and my emp20... but with prices of proms to me going crazy I need to find a way to program the cheaper solutions. cant afford to spend $30 $40 on a 3 proms for a $150 $200 Arcade PCB.

Was hoping maybe someone has come up with a solution????

There is a solution, substitute an EPROM for the PROM.

My new (old) Stag System 3000 lists these as supported, I can try it if you want to post me a blank chip.
