Ah great memories of digging these cabs out of that loft space. A lot of the cabs found their way back to life, but none will be cherished as much as this one I'm sure. Doesn't look much here, but the Jap base and work you've done to it mean it's now a corker
smiley20.gif

Rescuing the Scud was less pleasant - that cab was rank and the word 'corpse' describes the scene (and smell) very accurately!!

What a great day that was. I say that now, but distinctly remember at the time it was crazy f*cking hot, we were all shattered from moving dozens of cabs around and none of us took any food or drink...by the end I (and some others there!) could have quite happily burned the lot without a second thought
smiley36.gif

I'd do that again without hesitation though.

I would imagine so. I don't know anyone who has tried it though.

She has really took a battering over the years. I bought new plastics and a glovebox when I first bought the car and now they have scratches all over them. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's the best car I've EVER owned. 125k and still going strong.

Sega really nailed the colour scheme on these SR2 cabs.
Design wise it's such a pretty cab, even my Mom said it looks nice!

Dude, that Scud Race certainly was dire, it was even more unpleasant than the Pacman Caberet I rescued...and I never thought I'd say that!

I wonder how many of the other cabs from the GroupBuy are back up and running? It would be interesting to see any of the other refugees that were resurrected from the Arcade graveyard.

I'm always grateful what you guys went through when sorting out the group buy.

Bumping my question here - because black cushion spares don't seem to exist.

its worth a try the dye is about nine pounds a can you could test it on the back of one of your cushions first but i would imagine that black should cover red ok

I had some time off from work so I decided to spend some time on the Scud Race, it's almost there gameplay wise bar a few minor niggles.

There were 2 issues, the sound was intermittent to the front speakers and the FFB kept dropping out, both faults were solved by simply reaseating the connectors but the faults eventually came back. Previously I fitted a new potentiometer for the steering as the one in there was a bit jittery and I was hoping that was the cause of the FFB dropping out, but nope it kept on doing the same thing.
smiley19.gif

So I bought some JST (7000
smiley36.gif
) connectors which arrived on Monday and yesterday I spent a couple of (boring) hours cutting the old crimps off and recrimping all the connectors that plug into the drive board and servo board. I also did the connectors that output to the speakers from the amps.

I did them 1 by one to try and ensure I didn't make any mistakes. I had already invested in some decent tools which made the job a heck of a lot easier, it still was boring though.

Some of the old connectors were shot. Here's some blurry pics.

JST_2.jpg

Old on the left, new on the right.
JST_3.jpg

So after doing that I tested the game, everything seemed OK but the FFB was quite strong and when I went into the self test I couldn't set the steering center. Also when I pressed 'stop motor' in the test menu the motor span to the left (or was it to the right
smiley5.gif
) and the turn right (or was it left
smiley36.gif
) motor test was unresponsive. I was a bit pissed off to say the least so I left it for another day......

So today I gave it another crack, I tested known working components tna. I pulled out some spare loom from a Scud Race and proceeded to compare the cabling, I'd only gone and put 1 pin in the wrong place. Sheesh
smiley9.gif
, I'm so glad it's over with and I can enjoy playing the game.

Occasionally I also had some issues with crackling sound and picture interference when the FFB motor was engaging. That seems to have gone away since putting in new earth cabling and new crimp pins.

Cosmetically she is still a bit grubbly and worn, that should be an easier task to sort out.
That's all I'm doing this year on the cab as she will be in the conservatory over the winter and now she plays great.

Cheers.

Nice job. Where did you order the jst connectors and male/female pins mate? I need to do this to my sega rally. It made a massive difference changing all the connectors on my gorf

Thanks mate.

I bought them from JST webshop.
https://order.jst-mfg.com/InternetShopCustomer/app?shopId=0&language=en&restartApplication&isQuotation=false

Spend over 10000 yen and you get free shipping, but you will certainly get stung for customs duty. I should have bought more different connectors as the ones I bought (VHR-4N connectors) were only 9 yen each.
smiley36.gif

If you need some pins then let me know, I roughly worked out what they cost inc shipping/import duty.
(4000 Yen) BVH-21T-P1.1 (2000 pieces) 30.66 (45 UKP with vat, so 2.25p ea)
(7000 Yen) SHF-001T-0.8BS (5000 pieces) 53.65 (68 UKP with vat, so 1.36p each)

Cheers.

Finally got around to spraying my OutRun DLX base with the proper color matched finish (looks a bit lighter in the pic due to direct sunlight).

Wanted to get it done before the weather turns so I can start reassembly. The fiberglass pieces will probably have to wait for now

To give you an idea of what it looked like before, it had been previously painted over twice with the wrong colors:

Looking a lot better! How did you tackle that damaged corner?

Vamino said:
Well done stripping that down!

As panpar227 mentions, how did you repair the metalwork?

Cheers.

Thanks! A friend of my father-in-law's does metal work on cars and rebuilt the corner for me (part of it had to be cut out and replaced), and straightened the iron cross piece:

OutRunDLX5.jpg

I straightened out the metal underneath the replaced casters and replaced them with OEM. The ones they were originally replaced with only had the single bolt mount - ~ 800lbs on those small points and no leg levelers mangled the metal pretty badly

Technically this has been done on the kitchen table/floor but I changed this...

rsz_imag0484.jpg

...in to this...

rsz_imag0746.jpg

...as it would've bugged the t!ts off me. There's very little information about Buggy Boy online - had a look at it in MAME and the change is just a case of snipping a jumper wire on the sound board.
